Kara is looking for her match. To clarify, she's not soulmate-searching. This 18-year old with Leukemia is looking for someone with her bone marrow type so that she can get a transplant, live a long life and go on to tackle other matchmaking challenges (one that involves crushes and whatnot).
Through DKMS, the world’s largest bone marrow donor center, Solange, 50 Cent, Kelly Rowland and hip hop poet J Ivy are urging everyone out there to get tested for Kara. Could you be the one they're looking for?
Diagnosed on May 16, 2011 while her father was serving in Afghanistan, a biopsy of a nasal cavity tumor revealed that Kara had a rare form of lymphoma NKT – a white blood cell killer. Her parents Nathan & Rosie – who each served two tours of duty in Iraq and another in Afghanistan – immediately started looking to friends hoping one of them was a match for Kara. Since learning that none of them are matches, Kara’s family is desperately looking for a stranger who is her match and best chance at survival.
Go to GetSwabbed.org, find a testing site and register (if you’re over 18) in the database to see if you're The One. Nobody is going to harvest your anythings or inject you with somethings. This is just a simple swab to see if you're a match. If you are, a bone marrow donation is less painful and less invasive than you’d think. Seriously.
J. Ivy, who has performed and collaborated with Kanye West, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, The Roots and Kid Cudi, created a touching PSA for Kara. His spoken word paints the picture far better than any written word could. Watch him below. J. Ivy is using his powers for good, but he’s only half of the equation. The other half is you.
